The 14th Friedrich World Championships were held in Berlin from 6-8 September 2019 and attracted 28 competitors from Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, UK & USA.
The winner, in his first final, was John McCullough from York. John played Friedrich in the Final. His opponents in the final were David Oenkuer (Ger)(Maria), Guy Atkinson (Spa)(Elisabeth) & Klaus Blum (Ger)(Mme Pompadour). With high black cards and most of the reserves, John was always in control v Austria, Russia & Sweden. A supply train and general in the spades sector S of Radeberg contained the Imperial Army. Luckily for John, France had as few hearts as he did and the Hannoverian hearts kept France at bay in the end (21st turn finish). Earlier Peter Hannapel (Ger) had topped the qualification round table with John 2nd, David 3rd, Guy 4th & Klaus 5th. However, Peter had played knowing he would not play in the final John is particularly grateful to his fellow York and UK competitor, Andrew Brown. Andrew introduced him to Friedrich in 2012, taught him how to play well and the two have represented the UK together at international tournaments since then. A recent new tactical ploy from Andrew was used by John to help him get his first ever win with France in the qualification round. Andrew had bad luck this time round, coming 25th but he will be back! Guy is an ex-pat living near Madrid. He is a member of Club Dragon in Madrid, which hosted this year's event. Already a Friedrich UK winner, he won his home tournament for the first time. He topped the qualification round and then, playing Prussia/Hannover, beat Alberto Romero (Spain), Anton Tells (Germany) & Bjorn von Knorring (Sweden) in the final. The UK's two entrants, John McCullough and Andrew Brown, came 6th and 15th respectively in the qualification round.

Cafe19 will take place in Madrid on the weekend of 14-16 June 2019. See Jose Bonilla Rau's post on Board Game Geek (Friedrich) for the link to enter. Andrew Brown and John McCullough have already booked their places to represent the UK.
A new and very good play Friedrich online site has recently been launched and already more than 150 players are participating. Go to playfriedrich.com and enjoy.
The 13th Friedrich World Championships were held in Berlin from 7-9 September 2018 and attracted 32 competitors from Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, UK & USA.
The winner, his 2nd win, was hometown boy Anton Telle, who played Friedrich in the Final. His opponents in the final were Peter Hannapel (Ger)(Maria), Guy Atkinson (Spa)(Elisabeth) & Marcus Strassman (Ger)(Mme Pompadour). After an early Elisabeth drop (hard luck Guy!), Anton always seemed to be in control. Earlier Marcus had topped the qualification round table with Peter 2nd, Anton 3rd & Guy 4th. The two UK entrants had varying fortunes - Andrew Brown came a creditable 12th with 37pts but John McCullough had a 'mare', winning the Golden Hildi booby prize for coming 32nd with 22.2pts. Friedrich designer Richard Sivel beat a strong field of 19 others (including the current world champion and 3 former world champions) to win the FriedrichUK18 title and trophy.
Aptly he chose to play Friedrich in the final (having topped the qualifying round with 42.2 pts). His opponents in the final were Juergen Winter (39.5) as Maria, Guy Atkinson (39.5) as Elisabeth and Christian Blattner (39.2) as Mme Pompadour. Richard won despite Poems and Lord Bute falling on turns 7 & 11, although he was helped by Elisabeth falling on turn 10. The allies attacked him aggressively at the start, but all suffered heavy early losses. Despite his significant card draw inferiority, he always seemed in control towards the end. A few features of the tournament were: - the dominance of Friedrich: the first 8 games to finish were all won by Friedrich and 12 of the 21 games were won by Friedrich; - the number of early Elisabeth drops (which of course was a factor in so many Friedrich wins): in 8 games Elisabeth dropped by turn 10 or earlier; - where Elisabeth did not drop early, America or India did - in 6 games by turn 8; - a reluctant Lord Bute: in 8 games he did not appear before the end and in another 6 games he did not appear until turn 15 or later. Former BMYork member Bill Fisher came 8th, John McCullough 11th, Andrew Brown 16th & Ian Burge (in his first tournament) 19th. Almost everyone commented on what a lovely venue it was - the 17th century Bar Convent in central York. I have already asked to re-book it for the equivalent weekend in 2020 (12-14 June). If you did not play this year and might be interested then, e-mail [email protected] and ask to be put on the mailing list. Roll on Berlin18 and Cafe19 (Madrid)! The 13th Friedrich World Championships take place in Berlin on 8-10 September 2017, in Alt Moabit in old West Berlin. There is still plenty of time to enter, so head to the Histogame or BoardGameGeek websites for more info..
I am pleased to announce that we have 20 entries. Because it may be difficult to find enough reserves to fill a 6th table with just 21 or 22 entries, no more entries will be automatically accepted. However, if you wish to enter I will create a waiting list and accept your entry if at least 2 more are received (taking the total to 23). E-mail me at [email protected].
