Covid permitting, FriedrichUK 22 will take place at the Bar Convent in York on 17-19 June 2022. Entries will be invited on the BoardGameGeek Friedrich page later in the autumn - so keep your eyes peeled!
The 16th Friedrich World Championships (the 15th were cancelled due to Covid) were held in Berlin on 10-12 September 2021. Presumably due to Covid, entries were well down this year to 15, with game designer Richard making up the 16 (4 tables).
York duo John McCullough and Andrew Brown topped the qualification round in 1st and 2nd positions respectively. John netted 3 wins (out of 4) and 46.5 points, Andrew 2 wins and 42 points. In the Final John chose Prussia and Andrew his favourite, Austria. They were joined by former double world champion Manni Wichmann (Germany, 3rd) as Russia and Bjorn von Knorring (Sweden, 4th) as France. John had outrageous luck with the cards of fate (CoF), all 4 major CoF he needed falling by the end of Turn 12. This was particularly unlucky for Andrew because whilst John felt he could have defended against France and Russia for several more turns before they exited, Andrew had put him under tremendous pressure and might well have won in another 3-4 turns. Thus John joins Manni and Anton Telle as only the 3rd player to win two world championships and he become the first to defend his title. |
