FriedrichUK20 will take place at the Bar Convent, York from Friday afternoon 26 June 2020 to Sunday evening 28 June. Further details and an invitation to enter will be publicised in October 2019.
The 14th Friedrich World Championships were held in Berlin from 6-8 September 2019 and attracted 28 competitors from Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, UK & USA.
The winner, in his first final, was John McCullough from York. John played Friedrich in the Final. His opponents in the final were David Oenkuer (Ger)(Maria), Guy Atkinson (Spa)(Elisabeth) & Klaus Blum (Ger)(Mme Pompadour). With high black cards and most of the reserves, John was always in control v Austria, Russia & Sweden. A supply train and general in the spades sector S of Radeberg contained the Imperial Army. Luckily for John, France had as few hearts as he did and the Hannoverian hearts kept France at bay in the end (21st turn finish). Earlier Peter Hannapel (Ger) had topped the qualification round table with John 2nd, David 3rd, Guy 4th & Klaus 5th. However, Peter had played knowing he would not play in the final John is particularly grateful to his fellow York and UK competitor, Andrew Brown. Andrew introduced him to Friedrich in 2012, taught him how to play well and the two have represented the UK together at international tournaments since then. A recent new tactical ploy from Andrew was used by John to help him get his first ever win with France in the qualification round. Andrew had bad luck this time round, coming 25th but he will be back! |
