Friedrich designer Richard Sivel beat a strong field of 19 others (including the current world champion and 3 former world champions) to win the FriedrichUK18 title and trophy.
Aptly he chose to play Friedrich in the final (having topped the qualifying round with 42.2 pts). His opponents in the final were Juergen Winter (39.5) as Maria, Guy Atkinson (39.5) as Elisabeth and Christian Blattner (39.2) as Mme Pompadour. Richard won despite Poems and Lord Bute falling on turns 7 & 11, although he was helped by Elisabeth falling on turn 10. The allies attacked him aggressively at the start, but all suffered heavy early losses. Despite his significant card draw inferiority, he always seemed in control towards the end.
A few features of the tournament were:
- the dominance of Friedrich: the first 8 games to finish were all won by Friedrich and 12 of the 21 games were won by Friedrich;
- the number of early Elisabeth drops (which of course was a factor in so many Friedrich wins): in 8 games Elisabeth dropped by turn 10 or earlier;
- where Elisabeth did not drop early, America or India did - in 6 games by turn 8;
- a reluctant Lord Bute: in 8 games he did not appear before the end and in another 6 games he did not appear until turn 15 or later.
Former BMYork member Bill Fisher came 8th, John McCullough 11th, Andrew Brown 16th & Ian Burge (in his first tournament) 19th.
Almost everyone commented on what a lovely venue it was - the 17th century Bar Convent in central York. I have already asked to re-book it for the equivalent weekend in 2020 (12-14 June). If you did not play this year and might be interested then, e-mail [email protected] and ask to be put on the mailing list.
Roll on Berlin18 and Cafe19 (Madrid)!
